Tooth extraction is a crucial\nprocedure but its aftercare is all the more crucial. So, when you have your\ntooth extracted, you need to take some special care of your mouth as it would\nnot only help you to feel better but also help you to heal faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow the below mentioned instructions for tooth extraction aftercare as\nthese are important for your well being and comfort:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pain control:<\/strong> Take the recommended dose of pain\nrelief medication as prescribed by your dentist. Take the first dose of pain\nrelief before the numbness wears off. You can also apply an ice or cold pack to\nthe outside of your mouth to relieve pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Control Bleeding:<\/strong> An oral wound usually bleeds more\nthan the one on the skin because saliva prevents clot formation. Once the clot\nis formed, you need not to dislodge this. Bite firmly on the gauze pad provided\nby your dentist for 30-45 minutes. The pressure helps in forming the\nblood-clot. Bite on the gauze pad, till the bleeding stops. Try to avoid\nexcessive spitting and rubbing the area with tongue as it can dislodge the\nblood clot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Activity:<\/strong> Limit your activity after the extraction.\nTake rest as the physical activity may increase bleeding. While taking rest,\nkeep your head elevated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diet:<\/strong> Eat soft foods for the first 24 hours. Avoid\nthe foods that are hard, chewy, hot or spicy; as they may get stuck in the\nsocket or irritate your wound. Drink lots of water or fluids after surgery. But\navoid alcoholic, carbonated, caffeinated or hot beverages. Avoid drinking or\nsucking up with a straw for at least a week as it can dislodge the blood clot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cleaning:<\/strong> Do not brush your teeth, rinse mouth; spit\nor use mouthwash for the first 24 hrs. Your dentist will allow you to brush\nafter first 24 hours. But while brushing after that, be gentle near the\nsurgical wound and rinse your mouth with warm salt water every two hours and\nafter each meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consuming Tobacco:<\/strong> If you smoke or use spit tobacco,\nstop smoking and using spit tobacco for next 3-4 days because this slows the\nhealing process and as well affects your ability to fight back infection.\nMoreover, sucking process of smoking may prevent the clot formation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At times, you may need stitches after tooth extraction.\nThese sutures either fall out or dissolve and if they are non-resorbable; your\ndentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove these stitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Precautions:<\/strong> If you observe or feel any of the below\nmentioned symptoms, call your dentist immediately:<br>\n\u2022 Severe pain the day after extraction<br>\n\u2022 Excessive bleeding that is hard to control<br>\n\u2022 Swelling around the extracted tooth worsens<br>\n\u2022 Any reaction to the prescribed medication like; itching or rashes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact Dr. Bikram Singh DMD for the best possible dental\ncare solutions.
